2020 Subaru Impreza vs 2020 Toyota Corolla Comparison in Salt Lake City, UT

The Toyota Corolla is a household name when it comes to compact cars, and it's easy to see why. But when you're looking for an affordable compact car that's suited to life in Utah, there's only one option: the Subaru Impreza. Stronger, roomier, more capable, and more affordable than the Toyota Corolla, it's built with all four seasons in mind. Take a look below to see more specifics on how these two cars compare; we think you'll find the Impreza to be most impressive.

2020 Subaru Impreza vs 2020 Toyota Corolla: Design

Take a look at these two cars from the outside and you'll notice that, while they have drastically different styling, they're almost identical in their exterior dimensions. But that's easy to forget once you get inside. Though the 2020 Subaru Impreza may officially be a compact car, the inside feels much roomier. In fact, at 99.8 cubic feet of passenger volume, it's almost as roomy as Toyota's midsize sedan, the Camry (which has 100.4 cubic feet). By comparison, the 2020 Toyota Corolla has a cramped 88.6 cubic feet of passenger volume.

2020 Subaru Impreza vs 2020 Toyota Corolla: Interior Features

At the entry level, these two sedans may seem similar. But once you start upgrading, you'll discover that high-quality features are available at a much lower level than in the Toyota Corolla. Take heated front seats, for example. While these aren't available in the base model of either car, they're available in every other 2020 Subaru Impreza configuration. The 2020 Toyota Corolla doesn't make them optional for another several trim levels! And there are some features that the 2020 Toyota Corolla lacks entirely. While both the 2020 Subaru Impreza and the 2020 Toyota Corolla feature Apple CarPlay®, Android users are out of luck in the Toyota. It doesn't feature Android Auto™, but the Subaru Impreza does.

2020 Subaru Impreza vs 2020 Toyota Corolla: Performance

The 2020 Subaru Impreza is a well-equipped compact car that's incredibly fun to drive. Its standard engine generates 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. Compare this to the 139 horsepower and mere 126 pound-feet of torque in the Toyota Corolla and you'll get an idea of how anemic the performance of the Corolla is. The Toyota Corolla also has a standard inline engine, but the Subaru Impreza has a horizontally opposed BOXER® engine. Not only does this engine help decrease noise, vibration, and harshness, it also gives the Subaru Impreza a lower center of gravity. Taking a corner in the Subaru Impreza produces less body roll than you'd get in a car with an inline engine. This is a difference that must be experienced to be believed.

2020 Subaru Impreza vs 2020 Toyota Corolla: Safety

The varied weather is one of the things we love about Salt Lake City, but we'll admit that it can sometimes make the roads a little less safe. The 2020 Subaru Impreza is equipped to deal with this in a way that the 2020 Toyota Corolla isn't. That's because every Subaru Impreza is equipped with standard all-wheel drive, which provides superior traction on wet or snowy roads. The 2020 Toyota Corolla, by comparison, is only available with front-wheel drive.

While both of these cars scored the 2020 Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the Subaru Impreza a bit higher. The 2020 Subaru Impreza five out of five stars in its overall crashworthiness score, as well as five-star ratings in all categories tested by the NHTSA: Frontal Crash, Side Crash, and Rollover. The Toyota Corolla did pretty well, but it earned only a four-star rating in the Rollover category.
