2019 Subaru Forester VS 2019 Chevrolet Equinox Comparison in Salt Lake City, UT

The Subaru Forester is a true icon, renowned for its comfort, its safety, and its versatile capability. Even the most iconic vehicles need to keep up with the times, which is why the Forester was completely redesigned for the 2019 model year. This redesign saw marked improvements over the previous model, and it also means that the Subaru Forester outshines a number of other small SUVs.

Though the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox may be a popular small SUV, it simply can't keep up with the all-new Forester. Sure, the Equinox may cost a little less, but the Subaru Forester provides much greater value. Check out how these SUVs differ below, and don't forget to stop in for a test drive.

Subaru Forester vs Chevy Equinox: Space and Cargo Capacity Comparison

One of the most noticeable changes in the redesigned Subaru Forester is its massive amount of space. The interior is absolutely cavernous, with 111.9 cubic feet of passenger space. To put this into perspective, the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox has just 103.2 cubic feet of passenger space. Of course, this means that the Subaru Forester has considerably more headroom and shoulder room in both rows of seating than the Chevy Equinox.

Small SUVs are useful for their cargo space, and the Subaru Forester once again delivers. Its rear cargo area can fit suitcases, golf bags, and other gear in its roomy 35.4 cubic feet of space. Need extra room for a mountain bike or other oversize cargo? If you fold down the rear seats, you'll get up to 76.1 cubic feet of cargo space. You simply can't fit as much into the Chevy Equinox, which has 29.9 cubic feet of standard cargo space and 63.9 cubic feet of maximum cargo space.

Subaru Forester vs Chevy Equinox: Driving Experience Comparison

Though space to stretch out goes a long way towards keeping you comfortable, drive quality is just as important. The Subaru Forester and the Chevrolet Equinox both have fully independent front and rear suspension, which makes for a smooth ride. However, the Subaru Forester has a trick up its sleeve: the BOXER® engine. The flat design of this engine cancels out vibrations, making for a quieter, more enjoyable drive.

This engine has other advantages, too. For one thing, it gives the Subaru Forester a lower center of gravity. For another, it generates more horsepower than the standard engine in the Chevrolet Equinox while still getting better gas mileage.

Subaru Forester vs Chevy Equinox: Safety

You've probably heard of the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive that comes standard on every 2019 Subaru Forester; after all, standard AWD is one of the things that Subaru is best known for. This all-wheel drive system makes the Subaru Forester both capable and safe. Whether you're crawling over off-road trails to find that perfect view or driving down the streets of Salt Lake City in a snowstorm, the extra traction afforded by this system can be a real life-saver. What's more, the 2019 Subaru Forester comes with standard LED headlights and available LED Steering Responsive Headlights (which track as you turn to better illuminate your path in the dark). LED headlights are an available upgrade only in the Chevy Equinox, and steering responsive headlights are unavailable entirely.

Subaru Forester vs Chevy Equinox: Driver Assist Technology Comparison

Safety matters to Subaru. That's why, no matter which Forester you choose, you'll get standard Subaru EyeSight®. This is a suite of driver assist features: Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure and Sway Warning help you stay where you need to be, while the Pre-collision Braking System can help avoid or lessen rear-end collisions. Adaptive Cruise Control is also standard and makes it easier for you to keep a safe distance when you're on the highway, without having to mess with the cruise control settings manually. The Chevy Equinox has these features, as well . . . but they're available upgrades only and not even available on some trim levels.
