2019 Subaru Ascent VS 2019 Ford Flex Comparison in Salt Lake City, UT

While Subaru is among the fastest-growing names in the industry, Ford is one of the oldest and most recognizable names in the business. Today, these brands offer a variety of competing models, including the new Subaru Ascent and the stylishly square Ford Flex. We wondered what set these two SUVs apart, so we took a close look at their features, specs, and overall value. Below, we offer a preview of some more substantial differences, but we encourage you to discover the new Subaru Ascent in person during a test drive with us at Nate Wade Subaru.

Subaru Ascent vs Ford Flex: Interior Space & Capacities

While these are both spacious three-row SUVs, the 2019 Subaru Ascent can fit more people. Thanks to its three-person third row, up to eight occupants can fit into the 2019 Subaru Ascent. The maximum number for the Ford Flex is seven. Both of these 3-row SUVs also offer available second-row captain's chairs. With these chairs, the Subaru Ascent can still seat up to seven people, but the Ford Flex can seat only six.

And if you plan on bringing cargo along, the Subaru is the better choice. Fold down the third row of seats in the Subaru Ascent and you'll get up to 47.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Or, if you're hauling even more, you can fold down the second row to get up to 86.5 cubic feet! If that's still not enough, the Subaru Ascent comes standard with roof rails. The 2019 Ford Flex has just 43.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 81.74 cubic feet behind the first. It also only offers roof rails as an available upgrade.

Subaru Ascent vs Ford Flex: Comfort & Tech Features

When it comes to comfort, Subaru has you covered. Even the entry-level Subaru Ascent comes standard with tri-zone automatic climate control. If you choose the entry-level Ford Flex, you'll only get single-zone manual air conditioning. The 2019 Subaru Ascent also offers a stunning Harman Kardon QuantumLogic Surround Sound audio system with 14 speakers and a GreenEdge® amplifier. The most you'll get in the Ford Flex is a 12-speaker system. And with available 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability, it's easy to stay connected in the 2019 Subaru Ascent. You won't find Wi-Fi connectivity in the Ford Flex at all.

Subaru Ascent vs Ford Flex: Performance

Performance is yet another area where the Subaru Ascent shines, providing a perfect balance between power and efficiency. It's powered by a SUBARU BOXER® engine that generates 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque while still getting up to 27 miles per gallon. The Ford Flex has a little more horsepower and a little less torque, but it has noticeably worse gas mileage. 23 miles per gallon is the most you'll be able to squeeze out of the Ford Flex.

We mentioned that the engine in the Ascent is a SUBARU BOXER® engine; this means that it has a distinctive flat design compared to the V6 in the Ford Flex. This design gives the Subaru Ascent a lower center of gravity and a smoother ride. This smooth ride is further helped by the high-strength steel that makes up the Subaru Global Platform.

Subaru Ascent vs Ford Flex: Safety

One of the biggest differences between these two SUVs is that every 2019 Subaru Ascent comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. This powerful AWD system is great for exploring the natural wonders in Utah while also helping to keep your family safe. Whether you're dealing with a sudden summer rainstorm or deep winter snow, the standard AWD gives you extra traction to help make your drive that much safer. While AWD is available in the Ford Flex, it will cost you considerably more to upgrade.

It's the renowned Subaru dedication to safety that helped the 2019 Subaru Ascent win the 2019 Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS. The Ford Flex, on the other hand, earned no IIHS awards at all, with lower scores than the Subaru Ascent in the headlights, front crash prevention, and small overlap front driver-side crashworthiness tests.

Subaru Ascent vs Ford Flex: Driver Assist Technology

Subaru wants to make sure you and your family stay as far away from accidents as possible. That's why every new 2019 Subaru Ascent comes standard with EyeSight® driver assist technology. It's true that you can find similar features in the 2019 Ford Flex, but there's a definite difference: they're not standard. You'll have to pay more for the same safety features in the 2019 Ford Flex.
