2019 Subaru Crosstrek VS 2019 Honda HR-V Comparison in Salt Lake City, UT

We'll admit it: there are plenty of things that make the 2019 Honda HR-V an attractive crossover SUV. It offers nimble handling, high ground clearance, lots of space, and impressive safety--all at a great price. It takes a truly special crossover SUV to challenge the Honda HR-V . . . and the Subaru Crosstrek is that crossover.

The Subaru Crosstrek takes everything that makes the Honda HR-V impressive and does it even better. You'll get greater capability, more features, a smoother ride, and so much more in the Subaru Crosstrek. It has a starting MSRP that's slightly higher than the Honda HR-V, but it provides better value. In fact, if you were to equip the Honda HR-V with some of the features that are standard on the Subaru Crosstrek, the Honda will likely end up costing you more. We'll show you some of the key differences below, and you can always see how the Subaru Crosstrek compares to other crossovers on our other model comparison research pages.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Honda HR-V: Design & Capacities

When you first lay eyes on these crossovers, they may seem similar. But a longer glance will reveal that, even here, the Subaru Crosstrek has greater versatility. Roof rails come on every 2019 Crosstrek model, giving you room to store extra cargo or oversized gear. You can get these roof rails in the Honda HR-V, but they'll cost extra. Another notable difference? The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which gives it the ability to clear a variety of obstacles. At 7.3 inches, the Honda HR-V has nearly an inch and a half less room.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Honda HR-V: Interior Comfort & Features

You can already see the differences from outside, but stepping inside these crossovers will make things even clearer. When you sit in the driver's seat of the Subaru Crosstrek, you'll have a roomy 43.1 inches of legroom and a SUBARU STARLINK® Multimedia system that's complete with a 6.5-inch touchscreen. Sit down in the Honda HR-V and you'll get just 41.2 inches of legroom and a 5-inch LCD screen. And it's not just standard features where the Subaru Crosstrek excels. Available features like heated front seats can be had for a lower price in the Subaru Crosstrek than the Honda HR-V.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Honda HR-V: Driving Experience

Once you've sat down and picked your tunes, the fun can really begin. When you turn the key or push the button in the Crosstrek, it's a spirited SUBARU BOXER® engine that will roar to life. But what makes a BOXER® engine different than the inline engine you'll find in the Honda HR-V? The flat design of the BOXER® means that the Subaru crossover has a lower center of gravity, which leads to better overall balance. The engine also helps cancel vibrations, which leads to a much quieter ride.

When it comes to ride quality, the Subaru Crosstrek has another huge advantage. It has fully independent suspension on both the front and the rear. This suspension system allows each wheel to move over the road independently, creating a smoother ride experience. While the Honda HR-V has independent front suspension, the rear has torsion-beam semi-independent suspension, which doesn't provide quite the same level of ride quality.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Honda HR-V: Safety

Drive quality may be important, but good safety is essential. Both of these crossovers are safe vehicles. The Honda HR-V even earned the 2019 Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, though the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek won the even more prestigious 2019 Top Safety Pick+ award. You'll find many of the same safety features shared by both crossovers. However, the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek has one major advantage: all-wheel drive.

The Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system that's in every Subaru SUV is renowned for its off-road capabilities, and it certainly lives up to the hype. But even more importantly, this AWD system gives the Subaru Crosstrek extra traction on low-friction surfaces. This makes it easier for you to stay in control of the Crosstrek, even if you're driving in a monsoon-season thunderstorm or heavy snowfall. You can equip the Honda HR-V with all-wheel drive, but it will cost you extra.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Honda HR-V: Driver Assist Technology

For even greater safety, both of these crossovers can be equipped with driver assist systems: Subaru EyeSight® in the Crosstrek and Honda Sensing® in the HR-V. These systems share many of the same features, including adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist features. However, while EyeSight® is available on even the entry-level Crosstrek, Honda Sensing® can't be found on the base HR-V. In fact, it can't even be had on the trim level above that. You have to upgrade twice to get the features that are available in every Subaru Crosstrek.
