However, while raised roof rails are available for upgrade on the Forester, they come standard with retractable crossbars on the Outback. The Outback also has a few more cubic feet or storage capacity than the Forester. However, there are a few differences in what higher trim-levels offer. For example, the Outback has an available upgraded engine: a 2.4-liter Turbocharged BOXER engine with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. However, the Forester does come standard with something that the Outback doesn't even offer: Subaru Intelligent Drive that offers two different driving modes.
