Deciding to get a Subaru SUV is an excellent choice--but there are still decisions to make! The Subaru Crosstrek is a small crossover SUV, and the Subaru Outback is an SUV-like wagon, and they're both great options. They share many similarities, from standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive to standard roof rails. However, there are also some key differences that might help you decide which one is the better fit for your needs. Keep reading to see how these two compare, and then be sure to experience them for yourself with a test drive at Nate Wade Subaru.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Dimensions

For a small crossover SUV, the Subaru Crosstrek is remarkably spacious. Inside, you'll find 100.9 cubic feet of passenger volume, as well as 20.8 cubic feet of standard cargo space. This is more than most competitors in the segment. However, if you need more space, the Subaru Outback provides it. It has 108.1 cubic feet of passenger space, as well as a 35.5-cubic-foot cargo compartment.

What's more, the larger interior volume of the Subaru Outback also means that it's bigger on the outside. It's more than 14 inches longer and nearly an inch and a half wider than the Subaru Crosstrek. This means that the Subaru Crosstrek is better equipped for navigating tighter spaces.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Engines

The Subaru Crosstrek is powered by a 4-cylinder BOXER® engine that generates 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The Subaru Outback also has a 4-cylinder BOXER®, and it puts out 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. When you take the weight difference into account, that's even less difference than it might at first seem.

Despite the similarity of these two engines, only the Subaru Outback has an available engine upgrade. It can be equipped with a six-cylinder BOXER® engine that generates 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque!

Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Off-Road Capability

Both the Subaru Crosstrek and the Subaru Outback share many off-road capable features. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, active torque vectoring, traction control, and vehicle dynamics control provide exceptional traction and stability, while 8.7 inches of ground clearance means that they can both ably climb over obstacles. However, the Subaru Outback does have standard Hill Descent Control and X-MODE® (a technology that optimizes the engine, transmission, and AWD to increase traction on low-friction surfaces). These features are available on the Subaru Crosstrek, but they're not standard equipment.

Subaru Crosstrek vs Subaru Outback: Safety

Both the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek and the 2019 Subaru Outback are remarkably safe, having earned the 2019 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Both also come with Subaru EyeSight®, an incredibly safe driver assist system. However, this is also where the difference comes in. EyeSight® is standard on every 2019 Subaru Outback, but is an available upgrade on the first two Subaru Crosstrek trim levels.
