Subaru Ascent vs Subaru Forester: Size and Seating

If you need standard seating for up to five people, you and your passengers are sure to be comfortable in the 2019 Subaru Forester. With its 111.9 cubic feet of passenger volume, everyone will be able to stretch out and enjoy the ride. However, if you need to carry more passengers, the Subaru Ascent is the perfect choice. It's a 3-row SUV that's available in both seven- and eight-seat configurations. As such, it's appropriately larger, with 153.5 cubic feet of passenger volume.

The Subaru Forester does have more standard cargo volume: 35.4 cubic feet, compared to the 17.8 cubic feet that come standard in the Subaru Ascent. However, if you fold down the second and third rows of seating, the Subaru Ascent has a maximum cargo capacity of 86.5 cubic feet, which is greater than the 76.1 cubic feet in the Subaru Forester. In addition, all Subaru Ascent trim levels come with roof rails for carrying extra cargo. These are available as an upgrade on the entry-level Subaru Forester, but are standard on all other trims.

Of course, the larger interior size of the Subaru Ascent does mean that it's bigger on the outside, as well. It's 14.7 inches longer than the Subaru Forester, as well as 4.5 inches wider. This means that, when navigating city streets, the Subaru Forester is better equipped to fit into tight parking spots and narrow alleys.

Subaru Ascent vs Subaru Forester: Power

Both the Subaru Ascent and the Subaru Forester are powered by SUBARU BOXER® engines; however, the engine in the Subaru Ascent puts out considerably more power: 260 horsepower, compared to the 182 horsepower in the Subaru Forester. The difference in weight means that it's not as drastic a difference as it might seem on paper, and both are capable and responsive. However, the Subaru Ascent does have a higher maximum towing capacity. When properly equipped, the Subaru Ascent can tow up to 5,000 pounds; a properly equipped Subaru Forester can tow up to 1,500 pounds.

Subaru Ascent vs Subaru Forester: Value

With both vehicles, you get a whole lot for what you pay. That's how Subaru does things. That being said, as of the time that this article was written, the Subaru Ascent has a starting MSRP that's $7,700 more than the starting MSRP of the Subaru Forester. If you need the extra seating or space provided by the Subaru Ascent, it's worth the cost. However, if two rows are all you need, the Subaru Forester is also a truly impressive vehicle.
