Once a sturdy, truck-based SUV, the Nissan Pathfinder has evolved into a soft, comfy family crossover. It no longer evokes feelings of off-road confidence. And that's where the all-new 2019 Subaru Ascent comes in!
Thanks to standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a tremendous list of standard features, the Subaru Ascent is the new king of off-road-ready family SUVs. With comfortable seating for up to eight, Subaru is bringing the legendary, rugged toughness you know and love to bigger families than ever before. But how does it compare to the hot-selling crossover from Nissan? Read on below to find out, as we compare the two in a variety of key areas.

Interior Comparison: 2019 Subaru Ascent VS 2018 Nissan Pathfinder
The 2019 Subaru Ascent is the biggest Subaru ever, and it provides a roomy interior that dwarfs the passenger cabin of the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder. Where the Nissan Pathfinder provides up to 137.8 cubic feet of passenger volume, the 2019 Subaru Ascent offers up to 153.5 cubic feet. The Subaru Ascent even gives you a bit more room for cargo behind it's surprisingly-comfortable third row, which boasts a little more legroom than the rear row of the Nissan Pathfinder, too.

Infotainment & Technology: 2019 Subaru Ascent VS 2018 Nissan Pathfinder
The 2019 Subaru Ascent makes it easier to get connected and stay connected. While both these vehicles come standard with touchscreen infotainment systems, the Subaru STARLINK™ system provides Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® standard. You won't find that popular smartphone tech on the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder. And if you want USB charging ports in the third row, those are only available on the Subaru Ascent.

Performance and Efficiency: 2019 Subaru Ascent VS 2018 Nissan Pathfinder
The 2019 Subaru Ascent comes standard with the legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, as well as X-MODE® low-friction traction technology - making it quite capable when the pavement ends. The 2018 Nissan Pathfinder is available with a less-sophisticated four-wheel drive system as a pricey upgrade.
And if you do equip the Nissan Pathfinder with four-wheel drive, it'll only achieve up to 19 city MPG. The 2019 Subaru Ascent earns 21 MPG in the city, so you spend more time cruising and less time fueling up.

Safety: 2019 Subaru Ascent VS 2018 Nissan Pathfinder
They say seeing is believing, and that's why we believe the 2019 Subaru Ascent is even safer than the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder. The Nissan Pathfinder comes standard with basic halogen headlights, and can be upgraded to automatic headlights with LED low-beams. The 2019 Subaru Ascent offers available LED steering-responsive headlights, which pivot in tandem with your steering to improve nighttime visibility. You can also get High Beam Assist, which automatically activates your brights as necessary, and turns them off when oncoming traffic is detected. These headlight features can't be found on the 2018 Nissan Pathfinder.

Driver Assistance: 2019 Subaru Ascent VS 2018 Nissan Pathfinder
The 2018 Nissan Pathfinder offers one essential driver assistance feature, totally standard: automatic pre-collision braking. Thanks to standard Subaru EyeSight®, the 2019 Subaru Ascent also comes standard with pre-collision automatic braking, plus adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane departure and sway warning. To get adaptive cruise control on the Nissan Pathfinder, you'll need a trim level upgrade - and lane keep assist isn't available at all.
